The Hongkong Prize was established to enhance the global recognition of remarkable achievements originating in Hong Kong. It has evolved over the years to reflect the changing landscape of global excellence, while remaining committed to honoring outstanding individuals and organizations. The prize has also broadened its scope to include diverse categories that align with its ultimate goal of fostering progress and innovation.
The prize is awarded by the Board, which includes a Review Committee, a Compliance Oversight Team and a Secretariat. The Board is responsible for reviewing and interpreting the articles of the Charter; suggesting important scientific research fields for THE PRIZE; setting requirements for nominating experts; verifying and approving the final review results; and taking appropriate measures against awardees who violate professional ethics or rules of conduct.
In addition to receiving a monetary award, winners will have their work published in international peer-reviewed journals; attend world-class conferences relevant to their research field in Hong Kong or abroad; and gain access to top scientists and researchers and research facilities. They will also have the opportunity to present their work before an audience in Hong Kong. The prize is open to Southeast Asian residents and Fellows of the Academy, with submissions being accepted in three waves based on residency status: Southeast Asian residents first, then mainland Chinese and international applicants.
Awarded to a third-year student with the best result in History among those who take at least 48 credits, the Prize was founded by friends and students of Dr John D Young in 1996 in recognition of his passion for Hong Kong history and his belief that an education should include a deep knowledge of local history. The Prize encourages students to learn actively outside class by exploring and analyzing the connections between historical developments and changes in society.
The HK Phil is thrilled to receive the 2023 Hongkong Prize, an international accolade for the outstanding quality of its performance and recordings of Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle, which will be released on a full box set in November 2018. It is the fourth time that the HK Phil has received this prestigious prize.
