Origins
Amongst the many board games of the 18th century, a roulette table had to be on the top of the list. The early French aristocracy would gather in gilded gaming parlors in the Faubourg Saint-Honore. A roulette wheel was painted green in the early 1800s. The most sophisticated casinos would have two banks of roulette table. A more modest number of tables could be found on the ground floor. The game was still in its infancy by the time the American Revolution swept the continent in 1783. Roulette was not yet the game of choice for the nouveau riche. In fact, an earlier reference to the game was banned in New France in 1758. The game eventually found its way to the British Isles.
The game is still played today. Roulette was originally played with a single zero wheel in the red.
