The Sidney Prize is awarded once a month for an outstanding piece of socially-conscious journalism. Winners receive $500 and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. The Sidney Award is presented by the Hillman Foundation, founded in honor of union pioneer and New Deal architect, Sidney Hillman.

Winners of the prestigious Sydney Prize will have their work published in a journal of international reputation and will be presented with a cheque for £1,000. The prize is open to all UK residents and is not restricted to chess players with a recognised ACF rating.

Paul Masters of Sidney, BC, is the 2024 winner of a $1 million Lotto Max jackpot. He said he had forgotten all about his ticket until he went to the grocery store and found it in his wallet. The prize money will allow Masters to buy a home and pay for his children’s education. Masters purchased the ticket at a Shoppers Drug Mart on Beacon Avenue.
In his research on ribonuclease-P, Altman was able to produce artificial RNA molecules which could carry information or catalyze chemical reactions without the associated proteins. This proved that RNA could act as both an information carrier and catalyst, a discovery that earned him a share of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The island of Antigua and Barbuda issued a stamp in 2001 in honor of this achievement.
