The Sydney Prize and the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize

The Sydney Prize is awarded each year to a person or organization that has demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of peace with justice and human rights. Each year, the prize is presented in a ceremony at Sydney Cathedral and carries a monetary award along with an in-kind contribution from the City of Sydney to support the work of the nominee. The winner of this year’s Sydney Prize was the human rights movement Black Lives Matter, founded in the US by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi after the acquittal of George Zimmerman for killing unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

In order to perpetuate in some small way the generative influence that Sidney Cox exerted upon hundreds of Dartmouth students both in and out of his classes, a group of his friends have established this prize annually to honor an undergraduate paper that most nearly meets the high standard of originality and integrity that he set for himself and his students. The prize is announced each spring during an informal ceremony similar to the weekly gatherings that Professor Cox encouraged for his students.

Established in 2007 and supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize seeks excellent literary fiction of up to 3000 words loosely themed around the notion of ‘travel’; imaginative, creative and literary interpretations are strongly encouraged. The winner will receive a first prize of $5,000 and the two runners-up will each be published at Overland online.
