Roullete (pronounced: roul-let) is a gambling game in which players bet on the number or groupings of numbers, red or black, odd or even, or high (19–36) or low (1–18). Its name means “little wheel” and it emerged in the late 18th century as an important game in the casinos of Europe. A croupier spins a small ball on a revolving wheel with inset compartments, or frets, painted alternately red and black. The number of the compartment into which the ball falls determines the winning bet. The dealer also accepts bets on groups of numbers.

The roulette table is marked to correspond with the compartments on the wheel, and the bets are placed against the house, or casino bank. Bets may be placed until the ball slows and is about to drop into a compartment. The house edge on any bet is determined by the probability of a win.

Each roulette table carries a placard that describes the minimum and maximum betting limits for inside and outside bets. It is important to set a budget before playing and choose a table within that limit.

If you don’t have a predetermined budget, try placing bets on “outside” bets (groupings of numbers instead of individual digits) to lower your initial investment. This will help you avoid getting sucked into the game and losing money faster. It is also a good idea to only use your winnings for future bets and not dip into your original wagers.

Unlike some casino games, roulette is not played against other players and the house. This allows the player to concentrate on the game without worrying about cheating or observing other players’ actions. While it is possible to make a fortune at roulette, it takes patience and practice. Avoid grandiose or complicated systems and be aware that the odds are against you. Also, remember that the house has an advantage on all even-money bets. This is known as the house edge and can be reduced by implementing the “La Partage” rule, which gives you half of your winnings back if the ball lands in the zero pocket.

The City of Sydney’s support for the Sydney Peace Prize helps Laureates continue their work for a more equitable and peaceful world. The 2023 Sydney Peace Prize was awarded to Nazanin Boniadi, a human rights activist and actress who fights for women’s rights in Iran. She will be honoured at a ceremony in Sydney Town Hall later this year.

Another prize is the Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award, which recognises an emerging creative working in short film with a cash prize of $7,000. This award is open to NSW-based filmmakers who have had no more than five credits. Winners are selected by a panel of judges from the NSW Film and Television Industry Council.

This year’s competition received over 500 entries. Judges Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh whittled them down to a shortlist of eight, before selecting the winning story, and two runners-up. The winning story will be published in Overland’s autumn 2024 issue, and the runners-up will be posted online. The judges and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation would like to thank all the entrants for their wonderful work.

In addition to these, there are many other sidney prizes that honor individuals who have made an impactful difference in society. These awards serve to recognize their efforts and inspire others to join them in their quest for change. These can include social and environmental initiatives, as well as entrepreneurship. Many of these individuals are highly recognized within their field, and may be invited to speak at events and inspire others.

Other notable sidney prizes include the Sydney Taylor Book Award, the Edelstein Prize and the Sydney Peace Prize. The former was established in 1968 in memory of the late Dr. Sidney Edelstein, a scholar and businessman who founded a specialty chemical manufacturing firm. It honors a student who has done unusual service to the department and the major. In 1985, the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee began designating Notable Books (originally called the Best of the Bunch Lists) in a number of categories.
